Red Dead Redemption Hunting Tips

Per Rockstar: “The vast world of Red Dead Redemption is populated by a complex ecosystem of over thirty different species of animal, ranging from farm livestock to domestic pets to deadly predators. Each territory – from the frontier prairies of New Austin, down into the sun-scorched Mexican deserts of Nuevo Paraiso, and up into the greener, mountainous terrain of West Elizabeth – is home to its own distinct species and breeds of wildlife.

Each animal in Red Dead Redemption has its own unique behaviors: dogs will chase wagons, or bark at potential enemies. Barnyard animals will herd together, taking fright at loud noises. Large birds will scavenge from corpses, while predators like bears or wolves will put on aggressive threat displays and fearlessly attack humans.”

For me, hunting is certainly one of the funner aspects of Red Dead Redemption. It’s also a great way to earn extra coin since you can skin what you kill and then sell the animal parts in town. That being said, hunting can take skill and you will get ganged up on, ambushed, and most likely mauled more than a few times during your time spent in Red Dead Redemption. Here are a few tips to help keep hunting related death to a minimum:

Use Bait

There’s plenty of wildlife to shoot at, but we all experience cold streaks. If you use bait (can be purchased in most towns) you stand a much better chance of attracting the animals that you are looking for, assuming you are in the correct region.

Scan the Area

When you’re traveling off the beaten path, be aware of your surroundings and keep your Dead Eye meter full. I’ve also found it important to keep the volume up. Predators such as wolves and cougars often growl before they attack. If you fail to react, you may be dead within seconds.

Skin Everything

When you go on a hunt it can take some time – especially if you are searching for one particular animal. Because of this, be sure to take a step back and shoot other animals you know will wield extra cash. This way, if you don’t end up finding the animal you were searching for, you can still go home with something.

Double Tap

Taking a phrase from one of my favorite movies (Zombieland), be sure to “Double Tap” larger and more aggressive animals you are hunting. Often times, it will take more than one shot to put them down for good. Don’t let them get away and keep yourself alive. Double Tap everything larger than a raccoon.

Also when hunting in tall trees make sure when you encounter a bear or boar you have the buffilo rifle because it always takes one shot to the head with dead eye. (you can use any gun you want but the buffilo rifle is the best)

FAST SKINNING – when you’ve shot your prey down, ride over to the animal and hit R1 stopping your horse so it’s standing directly over the dead animal. Then hit triangle three times quickly. 1. You will dismount the horse, 2. skin the animal, and 3. re-mount the horse quickly without the cut-away to skinning the animal. Saves tons of time, and you still get the same provisions from the animal. Enjoy :)

YOUR WELCOME – I play on xbox. But, thats not the point. 2 Things. To make fast money, Go to Thieves landing or whatever south of great plains. Buy the house, or save some how. Go to the Liars dice and pay the $200 dollars to play, if you win, $600 dollars is yours. Liars dice is easy, (Only bet whats actually under your cup, don’t guess that they have something, unless you have too. They usually over bet. Ex: There will not be seven 6 dotted dies) If you lose. Go get yourself killed, and then you will be spawned at your last save with all your money back, then try again. WELL THAT WAS LONG. NEXT- HUNTING – Make sure to buy Tabacco or Moonshine or something to refill your Dead Eye.

Excellent website! The best RDR site according to me!
I you want to kill a bigger animal with just one shot, I recommend that you use for example the Bolt Action Rifle and aim for the animals head. Not as in real-life hunting when you aim for the lungs etc. And then theres no need for dubble tapping. Also when you are going to sell the animal fur etc, don’t sell it in a store nearby where you found them. You will get more cash if you sell them far away.

I find that when hunting more aggressive animals it is best to use a close range weapon such as the semi-automatic shotgun. This is because the animal is likely to see you first… and if it does you will need extensive power to take out the large ones, like bears and cougars. Bad idea to use rifles like the buffalo rifle as it only has one shot to make it count! BAD IDEA.
Another tip, make sure your dead eye meter is full whilst hunting and carry around some chewing tobacco to refill it.
