How to Duel like a Pro in Red Dead Redemption from Rockstar Games:
The world of Red Dead Redemption is inhabited by a large cast of characters, all living out their lives as John Marston makes his way across the land. One characteristic of the townspeople in the game is jealousy…
While becoming famous has perks like shopkeepers giving you discounts and people greeting you by name, it’ll also attract attention from gunfighters looking to make a name for themselves. The more famous you are, the more likely you are to be challenged.
After gaining enough fame, walk around town such as Armadillo in the daytime and chances are, a wannabe gunslinger will challenge you. Once someone does and you’ve accepted, you’ll have the option to review the dueling tutorial text. Here are a few steps for coming out on top in a duel:
1. After accepting a duel, the word “DRAW” appears and two meters are displayed on the right side of the HUD. John’s meter is blue and the red meter belongs to your enemy. Fill up John’s meter before your enemy and you’ll win.
2. Draw your weapon by either flicking up then down on the Right Analog Stick or by pressing the Left Trigger/L2.
3. Place your shots carefully and quickly using RB/R1, but watch the crosshair. It will change colors back and forth, red and white. Depending on where you aim, white will fill John’s meter more than red. Aiming for the gun hand or the top part of the enemy’s head when the aiming reticule is white will fill John’s meter faster than anything else.
Additionally, here are some tips and tricks if you want to take your dueling a step further:
* If you want to force a duel, put on the Elegant Suit that John receives after the first few missions and then get caught cheating in a poker game.
* If you want to gain 100 Fame as well as some Honor, disarm your enemy by shooting the gun out of his hand using Dead-Eye. (Do note that some duels that take place during story missions have enemies that cannot be disarmed)
* Shoot for the gun first and the hat second – embarrassing your enemy in a duel is always good fun.

Sadly..this game is a Rare Treat in terms of Sheer Artistic Beauty..the Sand-Box is Truly “Free” and Truly “open”..not just marketing.
The Use of Painterly Graphics..as opposed to Smoothed Out “GTA” Graphics..and most other games..is also a RARE treat.truly..RDR is Artistically PERFECT!
It really is!
The Overall “Play” is also..Awesome!
The “Positions” and “Movement” are truly great..I was so…Excited to find I could “Climb” up onto roofs..for no reason..but I “COULD..and that was actually for me..a rare treat..((Also..as far as “Strategy” is concerned..as I’m sure most know by now..this is also a way to Instantly..literally..”Escape” Bounty Hunters..in fact..one frustrated period I wracked up $3000 in “Murder Of A Law Officer” charges..fun..fun..fun)
Anyway..on those levels..other Designers could take much from RDR.
But..THATS WHERE IT ENDS!
For the “Technical” aspects of RDR..ARE MORE THAN “BAD”..THEY’RE SO AWFUL..SO POINTLESSLY LABORIOUS..SO INCREDIBLY INEPT..THAT I HONESTLY..AND I’M IN “PRODUCT”..I HONESTLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHO..WOULD..OR WHY THEY WOULD..CONTINUE TO EMPLOY THE “ENGINEERS” OF THE “RULES” AND THE “TECHNICAL SPECS”.!
From literally..ZERO..”Tutorials”..to the Incredibly..just..Meaninglessly Bad “Clock” that Only allows 6 hour “Saves” thus creating a pointless and constant need to “Save 5 Times In A Row” if you happen to want to play a “Mission” in “Daylight”.
Then of course there’s the “Text”.
Now this one..is so..poorly designed..so incredibly bad..I’m convinced no “Testing” was actually ever undertaken..in fact..were I the “Team” behind RDR..or a Manager or other Petty Tyrant at “Rockstar”..I would demand a “Look At The Books” of any “Departments”or Contractors who were paid or otherwise to “Test” the games Mechanical Aspects.
BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T..THEY POCKETED THE MONEY..OR SUMPTHIN..CUZ GUESS WHAT..ITS DOESN’T WORK DUDES!
Because I’ve watched my 17 Year Old Nephew with Perfect Eyesight have to “Press His Nose Against The Screen” of a 52″ Plasma JUST TO BE ABLE TO READ THE CRITICAL INFORMATION IN ANY GIVEN SITUATION!
In Fact..I defy ANYONE..to explain to me how..and the..Pointlessness of this waste I’m about to mention..makes my jaw drop open..I defy anyone to show me how the “Ammo Count” Info on “Equipment Wheel”..with its Tiny..and here’s the Jaw Dropping Part..”SEE THROUGH FONT”..is even remotely “Smart”!
In fact..the “6 O’clock” Position on the Wheel..requires you “Contort” the Character to be able to even see what it is BECAUSE OTHERWISE ITS ACTUALLY..(STUNNED DISBELIEF)..”SUPERIMPOSED OVER THE CHARACTER”..AND..IN “BLACK ON BLACK”..SO YOU LITERALLY..CANNOT SEE THE AMMO FOR THAT WEAPON..WHICH JUST SO HAPPENS TO BE THE CRITICAL TO PLAY “RIFLE” SLOT!
The Game..is FULL of these Amazingly Bad “Technical Aspects”.
One after Another!
And again..this wouldn’t be so bad if RDR were “Ground Breaking” as a Game.
BUT ITS NOT!
THE “CLOCK”..HAS BEEN DONE..SO MUCH MORE EFFICIENTLY AND “CLEANLY” IN “FARCRY 2″..AND “TEXT”..FONT.AND OTHER ISSUES..ARE ALL..”2 MINUTE FIXES”..
SO..FOR ME..THE POINT BECOMES THE ISSUE ITSELF..BUT ULTIMATELY..THE…”AGGRESSION”..THE SEEMING ‘ANGER” TOWARDS THE PLAYERS..YES..THATS RIGHT..”ANGER”..BECAUSE “MISTAKES” THIS OBVIOUS..SEEM LITERALLY..”INTENTIONAL”.
ROCKSTAR IS PAYING SOMEONE ALLOT OF MONEY TO PISS OFF ALLOT OF PEOPLE!
HOW ODD!
WHY?
WHY DO THAT?
But finally..its the TOTAL LACK OF TUTORIALS..AND..THE TOTAL LACK..AND I MEAN ZERO..LITERALLY..’ZERO”..NO EXAGGERATION……ZERO……”REPEATS” OF THE..FER CRYIN OUT LOUD..”CONTROLS” FOR GAME CHALLENGES LIKE..OH..Y’KNOW..THE “NOT REALLY VERY IMPORTANT” CHALLENGE OF SAY….DUELING?
This is amazingly Frustrating..as its actually a complicated task.
And again..AGAIN..THIS HAS ALREADY BEEN ADDRESSED PERFECTLY IN ANOTHER GAME EVERYONES PLAYED..”ASSASSINS CREED II” WITH THE PRACTICE RING..AND THUS..TO SIMPLY IGNORE A PERFECT DESIGN IN LIEU OF ONE THATS..WELL.IN RDR..ACTUALLY “NON-EXISTENT”..WELL..IT REALLY SEEMS INTENTIONAL!
So..the “Result”..is the “Perfect Frustration Machine”..a Truly Beautiful Game..with Great “Play” and an actual Open World Sandbox..so you really..WANT to Play..and then..its FRUSTRATION..after FRUSTRATION..so you sit there..SEETHING with Anger..
Thats not “Good Business”..or..hey..maybe it is..just Keep the Money..produce a Produc people will “have” to play..even if the Experience is SO much LESS than it could have been..and..AGAIN..HERES’ THE RUB…AN EXPERIENCE THAT COULD HAVE BEEN PERFECT..WITH NO EFFORT AT ALL…FOR THE ‘FIXES”..ALL ALREADY EXIST!
THEY DIDN’T HAVE TO “INVENT” ANYTHING!
JUST “PROGRAM” IT..BUT THEY CHOSE..YES..CHOSE..NOT TO!
So..here I am..trying to figure out “Why” the Game refuses to allow me to Acquire “Outfits” despite having every piece..why I cannot get the “Dueling Function” to work..and what it is I’m “Supposed To Do” in many “Challenges”.
Nawww..RDR has Great Artists..and the WORST Designers!
Pay someone ELSE “Rockstar”..or not..its your choice..but this is the same kind of Meaningless Irritations that keep me from EVER Playing..for One Second..the GTA games. For they…are EVEN WORSE..with none of the “Beauty” of RDR to boot!
Rockstar..at this point..is the WORST GAME DESIGNER in the “Big Tent”.
“Novelty” has been their entire “marketing”..but “Novelty” WEARS OFF!

I think you just suck at video games. I have experienced virtually none of your complaints will playing RDR. I admit that dueling was confusing at first, but now Ive got the hang of it. Oh and your text problem. Who the fuck complains about text? I have had zero problems seeing how many bullets I have left. If youre so worried then you should make your shots count. Does a soldier on the battle field know exactly how many shots he has left? No, but he gets by. I think that you must be playing on a low res TV because playing on HD I can read everything just fine.

I agrree that sometimes this game is very hard to read and even worse when you get near snow you can t see anything on your wheel of weapons. Also I wish the tutorial boxes would post longer so i have time to read them.

In fact RDR is an awesome game, BUT that doesn’t prevent it from having some flaws. There is no absolutely perfect game out there. The fontsize annoyed the hell out of me sometimes, especially in times we have wireless controllers so we can sit back and relax while playing, and DON’T have to press our noses against the screen anymore… or at least shouldn’t have to.

ya dude ur tv must suck nuts and ur nephew probably spent to much time that close and melted his eyeballs,as for gameplay and duels u must be a horrible player and we dont need tutorials to hold ur hand and teach basic knowledge of how to control a character,stop your whining and go play some wii or something,and while ur at it take your tv back cause either 1 u got ripped and bought crap or most likely 2 u have no idea how to adjust your contrast or aspect ratio,nothing in the game is hard to see,i feel sorry for ur plasma have fun with the screen burns.and yes i have a 52 inch lg plasma ZERO problems reading any text.i bet u call ur controller a paddle too lol.

Sorry ectoendomezo but if you want to complain about how hard it is to read the text in a game, next time use some semblance of proper grammar and punctuation. Your comment is impossible to read, what the hell is wrong with you dude? I believe you probably have either poor language skills, dyslexia or some other handicap that would prevent you from reading text in RDR properly. Your nephew must have this same disability since I can see the text perfectly well on my 32″ flat screen from 7 feet away.
Yeah, the clock sucks, and? You seem so worked up over nothing, calm down, this kind of obsession cannot be healthy. I never comment on things like this but your post is the worst thing I have ever read.

The reason you can’t read the text, ectoendomezo, probably stems from the fact that you type with improper grammar, and put EVERYTHING IN CAPS, and you “put” quotes around everything making “me” put emphasis on “the” wrong words which makes it difficult to “read”. Sorry if the designers for RDR forgot to randomly quote everything so it would make sense FOR YOU. By the way you spelled the word “something” with a “P” that might also have something to do with it -.-

Well I personally never have had issues with the font, I did have multiple glitch issues after the install. On the bright side RockStar has 24 hr tech support so after six hours of trying different things I got the game to work but I still have issues from time to time. I check to see if it was just me but if you look it up this game is notorious for glitching. I honestly think that is beacuse the game is complex as it is. Other than that this game was perfect. I could sit here and watch mrs macfarlene and mr marston and their playful banter all day.

Honestly I had no problems with reading anything on my tv and I have a 19″ LCD hooked up to SD because I don’t have the HDMI cable for it. Another thing is with the tutorials, in every thing I did there was a tutorial for it, granted that I stopped playing for a while and forgot how to properly duel which is a bit frustrating, however the fricken website we’re on now tells you how to do it plus the tutorial under brief in the pause menu as well.
